Founders Need An Operating System

Pilots, mechanics, and other professionals use operating systems to help them make important decisions and respond when something goes wrong.

Founders are expected to build companies, lead people, raise capital, manage pressure, and make high consequence decisions without anything similar.

Founder to Founder
is my attempt to change that. Each edition gives you three things:

A Story: One true story from my experience building, exiting, and advising companies.

The Lesson: A clear explanation of what the experience taught me and why it matters to founders.

Your Next Steps
: Practical actions to help you address the problem and move your business forward.

If the story feels familiar, the lesson can help you see the problem differently, and the next steps give you somewhere practical to begin.

Built at the Intersection of Experience and Research

There are successful founders who can share what worked for them.

There are researchers who understand the psychology of leadership, motivation, and performance.

Very few people have built a unicorn and then gone back to study—at the doctoral level—what helps founders remain effective, capable, and in control as their companies grow.

Founder to Founder sits at that intersection.

I have launched more than 15 companies, completed three exits, and cofounded a company that reached a valuation of more than $3 billion. Today, I advise founders as they build stronger companies, raise the right capital, and navigate major transitions.

At the same time, I am completing doctoral research focused specifically on founder psychological empowerment, alongside an MSc in business and organizational psychology.

Founder to Founder brings together what I have lived, what I see in my work with founders today, and what the research tells us about how founders think, lead, and perform.

It is not simply a collection of business stories. It is a practical operating system designed to help founders make sense of difficult situations and decide what to do next.

What We Will Talk About

Building a company creates challenges that most people never see and few founders feel comfortable discussing.

Founder to Founder explores questions such as:

What happens when your company outgrows you?

Why can raising money make the wrong problem worse?

How do founders lose power inside companies they created?

When should you keep pushing, and when should you change direction?

What happens to your identity as the company changes around you?

How can you regain clarity when you feel stuck?

These are not theories from the sidelines. They are lessons drawn from building companies, making mistakes, completing exits, advising founders, and studying the psychology behind founder performance.

Your Trusted Advisor

I started my first company more than 20 years ago. Since then, I have launched more than 15 startups and completed three exits.

I cofounded iPolitics, which became Canada’s largest independent political news outlet before being sold to the Toronto Star. I later cofounded HEXO, which grew from an idea into a publicly traded company valued at more than $3 billion. More recently, I led Brane Trust through its sale to a global financial technology company.

It has not been a simple or predictable journey. I have experienced the excitement of creating something from nothing, the pressure of rapid growth, the consequences of getting important decisions wrong, and the challenge of figuring out who you are when the company changes around you.

Today, through Founded Partners, I advise founder led organizations as they build stronger businesses, attract the right capital, and navigate consequential transitions. I have now personally advised more than 50 founders across industries, stages, and countries.

My first book, Billion Dollar Startup, told the story of building HEXO. Founder to Founder is what comes next.

It is the operating system I wish I had when I started.
